Other sites may offer advice; Lifehacker makes it happen.In this first special report, Lifehacker takes on Boiled Omelets. For years, I've been finding hints for cooking eggs in a plastic bag. I've seen this technique mentioned for camping, for RV enthusiasts, and for college students. It goes something like this: throw an egg into a bag, mush it up and boil. Before you know it—instant omelet. I decided to give it a try. Follow the jump to find out the results.
I consulted a half-dozen different sites and kind of merged their systems together based on the highly scientific method of "Oh, that sounds good. I'll do it that way." Here's how it went.Ingredients:A jumbo egg (which, conveniently, just happened to be the kind of egg I had in the fridge)1 heaping tablespoon of shredded cheese (per your taste)1 tablespoon of cooked mushrooms (leftovers from last night's dinner)Salt & Pepper (optional)A ziplock bagSteps:I started by putting up a large pot of water to boil. I cracked the egg and poured it into the ziplock and closed the bag. Surprisingly, this went without incident and was mess-free. Next, I smooshed the egg in the bag until it was "mixed". This was a lot easier than I thought it would be.I opened the bag, added the cheese and mushrooms and re-closed it, making sure to press out most of the air.Setting the timer to 5 minutes, I dropped the bag into the water. It ballooned up but didn't explode or leak.Five minutes later, the timer went off. I removed the bag from the boiling water and poured it onto a plate. The cheese formed a little puddle separate from the main omelet, but it was thoroughly cooked and ready-to eat. I sprinkled on a little salt and pepper and dug in. Delicious!
